[Troop222All] Sad News – The passing of a former Scoutmaster of Troop 222

Hi Troop 222,

It is with a heavy heart that I tell you my friend and fellow Scouter RB Owen passed away this morning.  Would you please inform the Scouting Community about his passing.  He was truly a Scout that served with honor.  He touched the lives of many Boy Scouts and Scout Leaders.  He was very active in Woodbadge, preparing food for 14 years for the trainers and participates.  He was also an active Unit Commissioner servicing many units and helping them to provide the best program for their scouts.  He served as the Scoutmaster for Troop 222 for 25 years and continued his service as an Assistant Scoutmaster for the troop.  He will be missed terribly.

[Troop222All] Philmont 2016 – We need an RSVP from every scout in the 8th – 12th grade

So that I know that you got the message please respond with a Yes, No, or Maybe to this email if you are in the 8th to 12th grade.

Philmont 2013

Philmont is a wonderful experience that I recommend every eligible scout consider.  Philmont is located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of northern New Mexico, ranging in elevation from 6,600 feet (base camp) to 12,441 ft (Baldy Mountain).  The 10-12 person crew will select the trek (in 2009 and in 2013 we selected from 35 itineraries) so the distance and activities will be decided by the crew.  Trek distances range from 50 miles to more than 100 miles.  Normally our crews have selected an itinerary in the middle of the range.  The trek lasts 12 days.  We’ll need an additional days to travel to and from New Mexico for a 13 day commitment, from July 26th, to August 7th, 2016

Here’s the official description:

THE PHILMONT TREK EXPERIENCE

A Philmont trek is physically, mentally and emotionally demanding.
Each participant must be able to carry a 35 to 50 lb. pack (but no
more than 25-30% of their body weight) while hiking 5 to 12 miles per
day in an isolated mountain wilderness, ranging from 6,500 to 12,500
feet in elevation. Climatic conditions include temperatures from 30 to
90 degrees Fahrenheit, low humidity (10-30%) and frequent, sometimes
severe, afternoon thunderstorms. Activities include horseback riding,
rock climbing and rappelling, challenge events, pole climbing, black
powder shooting, 12 gauge trap shooting, .30-06 shooting, trail
building, mountain biking and other activities that may have potential
for injury. Philmont strives to minimize risks to participants and
advisors by emphasizing proper safety precautions. Refer to the
Guidebook to Adventure for specific information. Philmont staff
instructs participants in safety measures to be followed. Each
participant and crew is expected to follow these safety measures and
to accept responsibility for the health and safety of each of its
members.

For an overview of Philmont see: http://www.philmontscoutranch.org/About.aspx

For some videos see: (Checkout the Living History Video!)

To participate a scout must be 14 years of age OR completed 8th Grade and be at least 13 years of age prior to July 26t, 2016.

The cost for the Philmont trek will be $870/person.  I estimate the total cost will be $1800, including travel and other expenses.

Each crew consists of 8-12 people, including 2-4 adults.  In 2009 we had one crew, and in 2013 we had 3 crews.  If we have multiple crews, the crews will select different itineraries through the 137,000 acres of Philmont.  We will need at least 2 adults per crew.

Interested adults and scouts should inform David Fichou (david@fichou.net, 650-722-0306) immediately.  We need to make our next payment to Philmont soon.  We have space for 16 – 24 participants and have paid Philmont a $1600 deposit.  Let’s not cancel this trip!
